Bringing Automation to University Laboratories

About KAUST

King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) is a private English-speaking university near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Since its founding in 2009, its research output has made it one of the fastest rising universities in the world.

KAUST’s 200 faculty and 1,000 graduate students undertake cutting-edge research in the areas of energy, agriculture, ecology, and computing. With such rapid growth, KAUST needed a way to allow their faculty to reserve 20 shared laboratories.

Incompatible Scheduling Systems

KAUST also had a unique challenge: Given the desert climate along the Red Sea, the laboratories had to be temperature-optimized to support the needs of each research program.

There was no available automated scheduling system that was compatible with their enterprise SAP system.

Enter Tricon Infotech

  • KAUST hired software engineering company Tricon Infotech to design a solution.
  • Utilizing its extensive SAP expertise, Tricon built and implemented a custom JAVA-based system to automate the laboratory reservations.
  • Now the faculty can reserve shared, temperature optimized rooms to undertake their research without having to compete for resources.

A long-term partnership

Tricon Infotech continues to manage the ongoing support to ensure consistent operations for KAUST’s faculty and students.
